The Plants
of the Palm House

Cordyline australis

English names: Cabbage tree, cabbage palm

Latin name: Cordyline australis

Family: Asparagus - Asparagaceae

Origin: New Zealand

The cabbage tree grows up to 20 metres in height. Its sword-like leaves, which cluster at the top of the shoots, are about 1 metre long. The berries of this plant are the favourite source of food for a number of local bird species. It is characteristic of  the landscape of much of New Zealand, where it has found many uses: it provides durable fibre for the production of textiles, baskets, fishing nets, ropes, waterproof coats and sandals.
