Cereus peruvianus

English name: Peruvian Apple Cactus

Latin name: Cereus peruvianus

Family: Cactus - Cactaceae

Origin: South America

This cactus grows to a height of 10 metres. Its stalk is cylindrical, coloured from grey-green to blue, with a diameter between 10 and 20 cm. The plant blooms nocturnally, and its flowers open only for one night. The fruit has no thorns and a reddish-violet to yellow colour. The inside of the fruit is white, and contains a small, edible and crunchy seed. The flesh sweetens as the fruit opens out. In warm countries the cactus is cultivated as a decorative plant.
