Asparagus falcatus

English name: Sickle- thorn

Latin name: Asparagus falcatus

Family:  Asparagus - Asparagaceae

Origin: Republic of South Africa, Mozambique

This species’ long stems grow up to 7 metres long, in favourable conditions. In the first phase of growth, they are soft and twine around their supports, but soon harden and their downward-pointing thorns provide support and protection from animals. The cladodes are dark green, narrow and slightly arched. The flower is white and fragrant; after it blossoms, it is followed by a bright red berry, a source of food for a range of bird species. In Africa, this asparagus species is used to form dense hedges which provide protection from intruders.
