The Plants
of the Palm House

Chlorophytum comosum 'Vittatum'

English Name: Spider Plant ‘Vittatum’

Latin Name: Chlorophytum comosum‘Vittatum’

Family: Asparagus - Asparagaceae

Origin: Under cultivation at the Palm House

The mature plant reaches a height of 45 cm., producing stamens and root tubers. The leaves are long and narrow, reaching a length of up to 50 cm., and a width of up to 2.5 cm. In the Vittatum cultivar, the leaves have long white stripes, with a belt running along the main vein. The stalks are long, narrow, cream-coloured and arched. New plants may grow on the overhanging stems, which give the spider plant a more decorative appearance. The inconspicuous white flowers grow at the ends of the stems. They have six narrow, white petals, six stamens and an upper pistil with a long neck.

The spider plant is one of the most cultivated of decorative plants. It owes its popularity both to its considerable decorative value and to the fact that it is one of the easiest plants to cultivate indoors. In countries with warm temperatures, it is also cultivated as a covered plant (under trees). In climates like Poland’s, it is grown in containers and in winter must be kept in a heated area.
